工作內容
翻譯（Interpreters and translators），即從事將源語翻譯成目標語的專業人員，分為口譯和筆譯員兩種。
職責要求——
- 源語轉化成目標語
- 掌握兩種以上語言，并具備流利的聽、說、讀、寫基本功
- 信、達、雅
- 合理安排工作時間
- 舒服的口語表達
口譯員要求口語表達標準、流利、地道；口譯又分為同傳與交傳兩種。同聲傳譯（simultaneous）要求譯者與演講人同步進行，因此，要求嚴格；因此，通常情況下，同傳需要搭檔配合，一人翻譯20-30分鐘然后替換另外一人繼續翻譯，這就要求譯員對發言內容要非常清楚和熟悉；相反，交傳就是等發言人一段話結束后再開始翻譯，交傳員通常在聽的時候要適當的做筆記。
筆譯要遵循信達雅三原則，將文稿翻譯的跟源語一樣，讀起來通暢易懂。因此，要求譯員需了解大量的外文習語及表達。譯者不像口譯員，在口語方面要求不是太嚴格，只要閱讀流暢即可。幾乎所有的筆譯人員都在電腦上完成工作。
翻譯根據工種也有劃分：有的是通用譯員；有的只專注于某一具體領域。

- 文學翻譯（Literary translators ）
- 本地化翻譯（Localization translators）講究翻譯的高標準，即將目標語翻譯為源語，要求譯者不但要掌握本土的語言，更重要的是文化
- 手語翻譯（Sign language interpreters）美國手語（ASL）獨立于英語的一種獨特語法結構的語言
- 導游（Guide or escort interpreters）

以美國為例，翻譯職業從事的崗位種類較多：教育行業、醫院、政府機構、企業崗位、互聯網、社會工作行業等；而從事中小學教育人數最多。
筆譯比較口譯工作地點較為固定，可在家辦公，而口譯員可從事教育、法律、醫學等相關行業的工作。*(5)
入行門檻
翻譯從業要求：本科及以上學位，至少掌握一門外語（除英語外）。
針對高中畢業生，想要從事翻譯工作需參加英語系列課程（寫作、閱讀理解、計算機技能），廣泛的閱讀；從事其他外語工作的還可通過出國進修，直接接觸本土文化和語言。未來想要從事社會工作，即聾啞人口譯工作，可參加語言課程（ASL）并參加相關的志愿工作。
從事工程、金融等崗位的會議譯員需具備碩士文憑并具備一定專業的工作經驗。
針對翻譯專業人士而言，并沒有統一的資格認證，但翻譯人員可通過參加各類資格考試證明自己的專業能力。以美國為例，美國翻譯協會（the American Translators Association）提供英語在內的24種其他語言認證。
美國國家司法口譯與筆譯協會（The National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators, NAJIT）提供西班牙、納瓦霍和海地克里奧爾語等小語種的認證。
國家聾啞人協會（The National Association of the Deaf, NAD）聯合美國聾啞人口譯注冊辦事處（the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)）授予聾啞人口譯資格認證，并提供專業考試：口譯、口語閱讀、口對口翻譯等。
美國國務院（The U.S. Department of State）頒布3項口譯資格考試：交傳、同傳、會議翻譯。
國際會議口譯協會（The International Association of Conference Interpreters, AIIC）提供會議口譯認證；醫療口譯認證委員會（The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters，CCHI）提供2種認證：注冊醫療口譯員，主要針對西班牙語、阿拉伯語及普通話；非注冊醫療口譯員（除西班牙語、阿拉伯語和普通話的其他）。
醫學口譯認證委員會（The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, NBCMI）提供西班牙語醫學口譯認證：認證要求：（1）18歲；（2）獲得高中文憑；（3）完成醫學口譯專業課程；（4）流利的西班牙語。
翻譯職業提升主要是倚靠個人能力和經驗；針對經驗和能力足夠占據優勢的可自雇經營。想要獲取專業經驗最直接的途徑就是去專業翻譯公司工作，或參加志愿工作積累實戰經驗。以美國為例，美國翻譯協會與紅十字有合作關系，可提供相關的實習工作。通過實習或工作積累，逐漸提升自己的專業技能、自信等。

翻譯職業平均年薪$48,360，從業人數共49,650；相比全行業的增幅度（7%），翻譯行業在未來十年的市場潛力很大，增幅度是全行業的3倍。以美國為例，該組數據證明翻譯市場的未來很有希望。根據數據顯示，法語、德語、意大利語、葡萄牙語和西班牙語是市場急需的語種，除此以外，還包括：阿拉伯、中東語、東亞語（漢語、日語、韓語等）。
美國手語譯員需求量迅速增長；隨著國際化和全球化的態勢，軍事翻譯預計會大增。*(6)
