工作內容
統計師（Statisticians）使用數學技術收集、分析及釋義數據并得出結論，許多經濟、社會、政治及軍事決定都有賴于統計師的工作。按所從事的行業或機構不同，統計師一般可分為政府、衛生及制造三種。*(4)
工作職責：
- 定義及明確需要解決的問題；
- 確定需要何種數據以解決相關問題；
- 確定尋找及收集收據的方法；
- 設計調查方法、試驗方法或民意測驗以收集數據；
- 收集數據，或指導他人收集數據；
- 分析及釋義數據；
- 報告分析結果。*(4)
工作環境
在商業領域——尤其是金融、保險等領域——統計師的職能與精算師、統計師、會計師等有較多重復的地方，因此，較少有統計師任職于商業領域。統計師主要任職于政府部門、科研機構（含科學、制造、工程等各領域）及各類高等教育機構，主要從事相關數據的統計工作，為相關科研或決策提供依據。商業領域的統計工作，多數由精算師、統計師、會計師等代為完成。
統計師主要全職工作，辦公地點主要在辦公室，但也需要經常出差或外出以收集相關信息。*(5)
入行門檻
統計師一般要求碩士以上學歷，統計學、應用數學等數學背景非常強的專業畢業。統計師不需要有相關的注冊認證或資格證書。統計師需要具備有非常強大的數學背景，并熟練使用數據庫、統計分析及建模軟件。任職于工程、制造或相關科學研究機構的統計師，還通常需要有相關的專業背景知識。*(6)

就業展望與薪資
統計師普遍屬于薪水較高的職業，以美國為例，按美國勞工統計局2015年5月公布的數據，美國統計師平均年薪$84,440，略低于數學相關職業的平均水準。而按2010年美國勞工統計局公布的數據，美國全行業平均年薪僅$33,840，數學相關職業的平均年薪為$73,720，而統計師當年的平均年薪為$72,830。*(1) *(6)
按美國勞工統計局的預測，統計師未來職業崗位的增長速度一般。按美國勞工統計局的預測，未來十年（2014-2024）統計師的崗位數預計增加10,100人，預計增幅34%，達到40,100人。該職業增長預期遠高于美國全行業平均預期增幅（7%），也高于整個數學相關職業的預期增幅（28%）。*(3)
